Destination: Disneyland
Named for its creator, Walt Disney, Disneyland attracts millions of visitors each year. The theme park opened in Anaheim, California, in 1955.
Disneyland is the third most-visited theme park in the world, just behind its sister locations in Tokyo and Orlando, Florida.
When to Go
September and October have the lightest attendance, but also the shortest operating hours, less live entertainment and a greater chance that rides will be closed for maintenance. June through August are the most crowded, but still bearable if you go on a weekday, with Thursday usually being the slowest day of the week. Lines are typically shorter during the morning hours, but the best way to avoid long waits on popular attractions is by using Fastpass, an automated ticketing system that allows visitors to make an appointment for a ride.
Meeting the Characters
Most character sightings occur in Toontown. Mickey is usually in his movie barn, and Minnie hangs out in her house. Goofy, Pluto, Donald, and Chip and Dale stroll through the area throughout the day. Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Belle tell stories near Sleeping Beauty Castle in Fantasyland. Pooh, Tigger and Eeyore linger at their thoughtful spot in Critter Country.
Disney's California Adventure
The crown jewel of Disneyland Resort's billion-dollar expansion salutes all things Californian. Imagine typical California experiences condensed to 55 acres. In the caricatured Hollywood Pictures Backlot, you can get your 15 minutes of fame on Superstar Limo. Or make like a rafter on the Golden State's six-minute Grizzly River Run, which winds around a mammoth, bear-shaped mountain. California Screamin, a looping roller coaster, is the centerpiece of the beachside amusement-themed Paradise Pier.
